Visiting the farm

Accessibility Statement

We want everyone to feel welcome at Bairnkine. This page explains what to expect when you visit the farm on a tour, and how to reach us if you have specific access needs so we can plan ahead with you.

Farm tours

Travel

We’re not on a public transport route, but we’re less than four miles from Jedburgh. There’s a bus station in Jedburgh, and from there you can take a taxi directly to the farm — Thistle Cabs on 07710 525762.

The farm is reached by a single-track driveway off the tarmac public road.

Parking and the steading area

On arrival there’s plenty of space to turn and park, with room for all types of vehicle including a coach of up to 50 seats. The steading surface is hardstanding, although it slopes. Wheelchair users can manoeuvre around most of the steading.

Reception area

The reception area sits at the top of a small, sloping grass bank. If you’re unable to reach it, we’ll meet you down in the steading. The door to the reception area is 85cm wide, with a 23cm-deep step into the area.

The toilet is next to reception in a separate shed, with an 86cm-wide door and a 16cm step in. The toilet height is 48cm. It’s a composting toilet with a handbasin inside the shed.

Access to the farm trailer

For those with additional support needs who can transfer from a wheelchair to a seat, we offer trailer access. The step into the trailer is 31cm high. Inside, you’ll find rubber-topped bench seating fitted with seatbelts for safety.

Dogs

As we’re a working farm, dogs aren’t permitted. If you use an assistance dog because of a disability, please contact us in advance — we’ll be glad to discuss which areas of the farm we can make accessible for you and your dog.
